Tekrema Cultural Center

2009 — 4th Year

A design for a community arts center in New Orleans’ Ninth Ward, which focuses on the aggregation of small similar spaces across the site that allow for both intimate and large scale uses.

The scheme is organized around twelve plastic-paneled metal frames arranged in a checkerboard pattern. These structures envelop a ‘unit’ of space, while remaining largely open to their surroundings.

Changes in the scale of units and their subdivisions allow for specialization of uses while maintaining the overall continuity of the site. Variations on the ground level, such as planters, level changes and pavement patterns further the potential for specific everyday uses, while allowing for larger community events.
