Human Hallway

2007 — 2nd Year

A brief group project to design a ‘spatial apparatus’ with a close relationship to the human body.

We responded to the prompt with a device that would give form to choreographed movements. A sequence of leaning, turning, crouching and swinging motions were recorded as individual frames, then cut from cardboard sheets at full scale.

When arranged in sequence, these sheets provided a range of experiences. Viewed from each end, they appeared to create a solid ‘tunnel’ of undulating shapes. From the sides, the complete ‘tunnel’ could be read with varying degrees of permeability depending on the speed and motion in each frame. Once could also attempt to pass through the ‘tunnel,’ following along with the recorded motions.
